Direct Legal Services

Friends of Farmworkers provides free legal representation to low-wage workers from migrant and immigrant communities for a wide variety of issues arising out of their employment.

Our current program priority areas are:

1. Minimum wage and wage payment problems;

2. Violations of workers’ rights under federal and state protective statutes relating to employment;

3. Protecting workers from unsafe and unhealthy work conditions;

4. Remedying discrimination or retaliation against workers for exercising their legal rights;

5. Remedying discrimination in employment and housing on the basis of                                                                                    race, national origin, sex, disability, or familial status;

6. Remedying problems associated with substandard housing provided to groups of workers in connection with their employment;

7. Establishing eligibility rights to public benefits.

Advocacy

We advocate with local, state and federal public sector policy makers at the legislative and executive branches, on issues concerning employment related claims of workers and/or related to their status as farmworkers.

We advocate on issues such as:

Employment

Housing

Eligibility Rights to Public benefits

Language Access

Immigration Reform

Our advocacy strategies aimed at policy makers include:

• Analyzing, commenting and supporting or opposing local and State statutes and regulations which have an impact on our target client population within PA;

• Advocating for Language access within court and administrative proceedings; and

• Advocating for immigration guest workers policies to ensure fair compliance with H2B nonimmigrant visas that allows foreign nationals to enter into the U.S. temporarily and engage in nonagricultural employment which is seasonal, intermittent, a peak load need, or a one-time occurrence
